    Hairpin lace takes a bit of extra practice to master, but it’s worth every second! Bold results are created when we stretch ourselves, and this piece is extraordinary.

Cascade Yarns Ultra Pima, DK weight #3 yarn (100% pima cotton; 220 yd./200 m per 3.5 oz./100 g hank)
• 3 (4, 4) hanks Brick 3792 or Sky Blue 3727

YARN ALTERNATIVE
Valley Yarns Valley Superwash DK, DK weight #3 yarn (100% extra-fine superwash merino; 137 yd./125 m per 1.76 oz./50 g ball)

HOOK & OTHER MATERIALS
• US size F/5 (3.75 mm) crochet hook
• Hairpin Lace Loom (for 4 in./10 cm wide strips)
• Stitch marker
• Scrap yarn
• Yarn needle

GAUGE
18 dc and 9 rows = 4 in./10 cm square
Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain gauge.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES
Hairpin Lace Basic Join
1. Lay strips side by side.
2. Working with strip on left first, insert hook into indicated number of loops.
3. Working in loops on right strip, insert hook into indicated number of loops and pull through loops on hook.
4. Insert hook into next indicated number of loops on left strip and pull previous loops through.
5. Insert hook into next indicated number of loops of right strip and pull previous loops through.
6. Repeat Steps 4–5 to the end. Secure last 2 loops with stitch marker until finishing edge.

Hairpin Lace Basic Finish
1. Insert hook into indicated number of loops.
2. Pull indicated number through 1st loops.
3. Insert hook into next indicated number of loops and pull through.
4. Repeat Step 3 until indicated. Secure last 2 loops with stitch marker until finishing edge.

NOTES
• Beginning ch does not count as a st unless indicated.
• If Hairpin Strips become too long for loom, remove bottom frame and most of lower loops. Make sure to keep some on loom. Return bottom frame to loom. Roll removed loops and secure to bottom frame with scrap yarn.
• Pattern is written for size S/M, with adjustments for larger sizes in parentheses.


Hairpin Strips (make 2 of each)
Use Hairpin Loom to make the following strips, 2 of each size.
Strip 1: 4 in./10 cm strip of 102 (112, 122) sts
Strip 2: 4 in./10 cm strip of 153 (168, 183) sts
Strip 3: 4 in./10 cm strip of 204 (224, 244) sts
Use scrap yarn as guide before removing loops from loom if desired. Roll for easy storing and set aside.

Motif
Make magic ring.
Round 1: Ch 8 (counts as dc, ch-5), [dc, ch 5] 5 times in ring, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-8 to join—6 dc, 6 ch-5 spaces.
Round 2: Sl st in next 3 chs, ch 3 (counts as 1st dc here and throughout), (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same ch-5 space, ch 5, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-5 space, ch5; repeat from * around, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-3 to join—6 groups of (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) here and throughout, 6 ch-5 spaces.
Round 3: Sl st in next dc, sl st in next ch-2 space, ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same space, ch 5, sc in next ch-5 space, ch 5, *(2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 space, ch 5, sc in next ch-5 space, ch 5; repeat from * around, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-3 to join—12 ch-5 spaces.
Round 4: Sl st in next dc, sl st in next ch-2 space, ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same space, ch 5, *sc in next ch-5 space, ch 5; repeat from * around to next ch-2 space, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch-2 space, ch 5**; repeat from * to ** around, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-3 to join—18 ch-5 spaces.
Rounds 5–10 (11, 12): Repeat Round 4—54 (60, 66) ch-5 spaces.
Do not fasten off.

Strip 1 Join
Round 11 (12, 13): Sl st in next dc, sl st in next ch-2 space, ch 1, sc in same space, ch 1, insert hook through 1st 2 loops of Strip 1, ch 1 through loops, ch 1, *sc in next ch-space, ch 1, insert hook through next 2 loops of Strip 1, ch 1 through loops, ch 1; repeat from * over next 49 (54, 59) ch-2 and ch-5 spaces (leave last side of ch-5 spaces unworked), sc in same space.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Strip 2 Join

Work Hairpin Lace Basic Join, working 2 loops from Strip 1 and 3 loops from Strip 2. Secure last 2 sets of loops



Strip 3 Join
Work Hairpin Lace Basic Join, working 3 loops from Strip 2 and 4 loops from Strip 3. Secure last 2 sets of loops.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Assembly
Joining Sides
With both Strip 3s, work Hairpin Lace Basic Join on each side using 2 loops, work Hairpin Lace Basic Finish with 2 loops 10 (12, 14) times on right side and secure with scrap yarn. Insert hook through beginning 2 loops again, work Hairpin Lace Basic Finish with 2 loops 10 (12, 14) times on left side and secure with scrap yarn. Starting with secured loops from right side, work Hairpin Lace Basic Join to secured loops from left. Work Hairpin Lace Basic Join using 2 loops 40 times.

Mark last 2 loops with stitch marker. Work Hairpin Lace Basic Finish with 2 loops on right side 40 (46, 52) times. Insert hook through loops with stitch markers and work Hairpin Lace Basic Finish with 2 loops on left side 40 (46, 52) times. Secure.

Starting with secured loops from right side, work Hairpin Lace Basic Join to secured loops from left. Work Hairpin Lace Basic Join using 2 loops 40 times. Mark last 2 loops with scrap yarn. Work Hairpin Lace Basic Finish with 2 loops 10 (12, 14) times on right side and secure with scrap yarn. Insert hook through loops with scrap yarn and work Hairpin Lace Basic Finish with 2 loops 10 (12, 14) times on left side and secure. Starting with secured loops from right side, work Hairpin Lace Basic Join to secured loops from left. Work Hairpin Lace Basic Join twice. Secure and continue to Joining Shoulders.

Joining Shoulders
Note: When working a sc to join strips, take care to work through loops from both sides. Once loops have been secured with a sc, remove the stitch marker.

Working along edges of hairpin lace on one side, join yarn in last Basic Join of both Strip 3s.

Ch 7, sc in middle of Strip 3, ch 7, sc in join of Strips 3 and 2, ch 7, sc in middle of Strip 2, ch 7, sc in join of Strips 2 and 1, ch 7, sc in middle of Strip 1, ch 7, sc in ch-2 space of Motif, turn, sc in ch-2 space on opposite side, ch 3, sl st in ch-7 space on opposite side, ch 3, sc in middle of Strip 1, ch 3, sl st in ch-7 space on opposite side, ch 3, sc in join of Strips 1 and 2, ch 3, sl st in ch-7 space on opposite side, ch 3, sc in middle of Strip 2, ch 3, sl st in ch-7 space on opposite side, ch 3, sc in join of Strips 2 and 3, ch 3, sl st in ch-7 space on opposite side, sc in middle of Strip 3, ch 3, sl st in ch-7 space on opposite side, ch 3, sl st to 1st sc to join.


Fasten off and weave in ends. Repeat with other shoulder.
